Recent Hand

At a recent sectional swiss team event you pick up a solid opening bid: KQ Q107 J5 AKQ954. Both vul, you open 1C. It goes pass, partner bids 1S and RHO bids 5D. Now what?

Answer tomorrow…

I think I have to double. This obviously isn’t a FP situation, but I want to show partner I have a little extra; if partner pulls I have decent spades… I know there’s no guarantee we’re beating 5D, but that’s not the end of the world at IMPs if there are no uptricks, while +200 instead of +500 might be. Anyway, I can always blame partner if what they do is wrong now 🙂

Double. Unconditionally for penalty.

There is no point trying to outguess the purpose of the 5D preempt. Will RHO have a 10-card or 11-card suit in diamonds? It is possible but improbable. The more likely explanation is that RHO has 9 tricks (possibly 9 card suit).
